Huang Qiushuang wins Tokyo World Cup

and becomes 2011 World Cup champ...(via The Gymnastics Examiner). Congrats to Huang~
China's Huang Qiushuang captured the women's all-around title at the Tokyo World Cup Friday, becoming the most successful all-around gymnast on the World Cup circuit this season in the process.
...
Huang's first-place finish in Tokyo assures that she is the overall World Cup champion in women's gymnastics this season (here's how to understand the World Cup points system). It may also help rehabilitate her status on the Chinese team .

Blythe also gives the link of the complete results from the Tokyo World Cup. By comparing the scores with those from Stuttgart Cup, she did a better job on VT/FX and must have given a decent perform on beam too, but received a comparable lower scores on bars.

Will post the link to the vids once available.

Huang Qiushuang Fractured Her Hand

(Photo via The Couch Gymnast)

Zhang Jie, the CCTV gymnatics sport reporter, mentioned in her WeiBo that Qiushuang fractured her hand ( metacarpal fracture) yesterday during a training session. Sigh:(. Doctor said that a full recovery will take about 50 days. We wont see her in next weekend's Glasgow World Cup.

Hope she get better soon ~~~

Huang Qiushuang - 2011 American Cup

Here are Huang's VT, UB & FX.

betweentheolympics On her overall performance
Huang Qiushuang continued to be her frustrating self. She competed an easy double twist on vault, and hit her somewhat downgraded bars. She looked good on beam for the first 20 seconds, hitting a beautiful front pike, and looked like she was actually going to connect her acro series. But then, she fell on her series and on a leap later on in the routine. ... She is such a beautiful gymnast who has tons of potential, but she needs to learn how to hit four for four under pressure.
The things I enjoyed watching: Wieber's BB, Mustafina's UB, Huang hit her UB and FX, Mustafina's 3.5 twist, Wieber's VT, Raisman's calmness, Kaeslin 's save on BB

And some comments from Lauren Hopkins
Raisman, who had poor form throughout, received an 8.5 for her efforts, where as Huang – who scored a 15.133 with near-perfect form and a beautiful stuck double layout dismount – received only an 8.433 E score. There is no world in which Raisman should get a higher execution score than a Chinese gal on this event. It’s absolutely impossible.

More on Huang Qiushuang - The Day Before American Cup

Blythe's "Seven questions with Huang Qiushuang"
Q: How did you and your teammates and coaches feel about China's performance at the 2010 World Championships?

Huang Qiushuang: "The 2010 World Championships were like a showcase for the youth athletes, and the new athletes wanted to pratcice and get some experience at the world level."

Q: Do you feel competitive with your teammates? Do you feel pressure?

Huang Qiushuang: "Yes, I do. Under this pressure in competition, I try to pursue the best level and skill for each event as I can so I can go to international championships."

On the "Who's going to win the American Cup? (women)" discussion hosted by Blythe. Here is Clara (STOI!)'s pick:
Everyone else is going to be saying Mustafina or Wieber, with good reason because they're the favourites and on paper would be pretty evenly matched. But I'm going to put another possibility out there. Huang Qiushuang will, with her impeccable timing, choose this most important of competitions to finally get her s*** together. She's got to do it sometime, and we all know it won't be at a major championship, so why not now?

2011 American Cup

WOW, what a line up for 2011 American Cup. If only Ana can come.

Jiang Yuyuan, Huang Qiushuang and Lu Bo-one of the best AAers in Chinese MAG team-are competing. Cant wait to see JYY and HQS' new routines after the winter training, and whether they will compete Amanar in the 2011 first big international meet.

New Updates from Coach Lu's Blogs

Coach Lu updated 4 blogs with his comments on the Asians Games regards Chinese WAG TF, AA, EF Day 1, EF Day 2.

Here the translation from IG

On the competition in Asian Games
The Asian Games had a relatively relaxed atmosphere without pressure. As long as the there were no major mistakes they would take gold, which affected the attitude of our gymnasts. At the world championships and Olympic Games, with teams from the United States and Europe, the question is if our gymnasts can withstand that kind of tension and stress and compete with high morale, confidence and peace of mind.

Both Lu and Jiang herself actually mentioned in a post-competition interview that Jiang was "under the weather"(a sudden period) in the TF.

On Chinese WAG's Golden Sweep in Guangzhou .
The Asian Games results don't really represent how powerful our team is. Despite the so-called 'grand slam' of the Asian Games gold medals, we should keep a clear head. The success at the games is only the beginning. The Chinese team has a long way to go toward the 2012 Olympics!

On the Jiang Yuyuan's performance in TF
Despite the joy in taking all the golds, we can't ignore the many problems, such as the inconsistency of Jiang Yuyuan and Huang Qiushuang. Jiang Yuyuan was not at her best in the team competition, and although we can understand an error, as an elite athlete she should not be allowing multiple mistakes. And as the women's team captain, her performance is critical in stabilizing the team.

On Huang Qiushuang's overall performance.
Huang Qiushuang was wildly inconsistent at this meet. In the all-around final, in fact, she had a better chance of Sui than winning. "In the competition she is always unstable... she needs psychological counseling and guidance to learn how to control herself.

His Comments on Chinese WAG's Vault.
The Asian Games served as a warning, that especially on vault we need to make great efforts to improve.
Words on the street that Huang can do a Amanar, but never compete one yet. Another Chinese junior Yao Jinnan is training Y900. The main theme for Chinese WAG's traditional "winter training" will be upgrade upgrade, as usual. Let's all wait till next Spring to see those new skills.

The Best of Asian Games

UB: Kexin EF (the highest UB overall score since D score system). By connecting the 1 1/2 pirouette with dismount, her highest D score is 7.4(done that in WC TF).

BB: Sui Lu EF - gymtruthteller called it the best BB routine of the year. She took out the bhs from her first pass (used to be front pike+phs+bhs swingdown)- one lesson learned from WC TF.

FX: Sui Lu AA - I finally begin to like her floor music. :) "Scent of a Woman" really fits her personality.

VT: Huang Qiushuang VT- best DTY landings for her, probably throughout 2010. Coach Lu mentioned in an interview that Huang is training for Y900.

New Elements added to WAG Code of Points

(via FullTwist)

(by MostepanovaFan)

Huang Qiushuang's Stadler forward in L grip with 360 turn to handstand (initiated on 1 arm before handstand ) is rated E. HUANG is actually a hard version BI(elgrip-endo to immediate BI) which is also an E bar pirouette. I guess we will not see a lot HUANG around on bars.

Asian Games WAG AA results

Here are comments from the-all-aroundand FIG

Congrats to Sui Lu for the wonderful performance in AA. But we wish Chinese AAers, Jiang & Huang, can outperform our BB&FX specialist next time. Besides, with new 554 Prelim and 533 TF lineup for London quad, any team can hardly afford specialists(max two 2-apparatus specialists). For Sui Lu to make for the 2012 OG team- given Kexin is going, she needs to make some significant progress in one of her two weak events. She should have a better shot with bars. Hope our girls can make some improvement during the winter training.

News of podium training Asian Game 2010

-translated by longdoydoy

(shows scene of Chinese WAG team entering arena)
Narrator: Night of November 11, 2010, the 6 team members of the Chinese WAG team, Jiang Yuyuan, He Kexin etc., showed up at the podium training in preparations for the beginning of competitions. In their one and a half hour training, they completed the exercises for UB, BB, FX and VT, along with the Japanese and Indian teams. We noticed that every crucial technique was repeated twice by the athletes due to being in good mental and physical conditions; it seems that the lost of spirits since the recent gymnastics World Tournament Championships (WTC) was swept away. WAG team head coach, Lu Shan Zhen, had a smile on his face.

(Coach Lu interviewed)
Coach Lu: The girls had done well at the podium today, they had shown their spirits and competitiveness. After we had summarized their insufficiencies at the last gymnastics WTC, we asked that (look forward that) our girls could perform undeterred. Indeed, they had performed well on podium today, but it does not guarantee the same results when they’re at the competitions; but I hope their high spirits could be brought forward to the actual competitions.

(shows scenes of gymnasts from different countries at podium training)
Narrator: While the Chinese WAG team’s current main opponents are the Europeans and the Americans, but Coach Lu stressed that the strengths of the Japanese and the Koreans are not to be underestimated; especially, the North Koreans, who were reportedly banned from participation due to the disclosure of a violation of age falsification of one of their athletes recently, however, if the North Koreans were allowed to compete, they would be the formidable VT contenders.

Coach Lu: Each of the Japanese athletes is strong; they were 3rd in AA and 2nd in UB at last year’s Worlds. Also, one Korean was in the Worlds VT finals…Then there are the North Koreans…

Interviewing reporters: …the North Koreans aren’t here this time, are they?

Coach Lu: …I really don’t know, at this point, it is not definite as far as I know. Right till this moment, to my knowledge, it is not definite that the North Koreans are banned from this competition.

Reporter: Have you seen them here, so far…?

Coach Lu: But, no, I have not. Then again, if they were here, they would be a very “secretive” team (having the capability of great intimidation).

Narrator: Lastly, Coach Lu expressed that the Chinese team will not lower it’s D-value to play safe just because the opponents are not too challenging this time around, as this meet is part of the groundwork for the 2012 London Olympics.

Move Media Coverage on Chinese Gymnastics in Rotterdam

-translated by longdoydoy

Chinese teams returned to Beijing

(news studio)
Broadcaster: The Holland Worlds ended yesterday afternoon and the Chinese teams arrived in Beijing. As the Asian Games approaches (I think she said), we worry for our WAG team and even our MAG team was intimidated by the Japanese team.

(Beijing airport)
Narrator: The Chinese teams were home, arriving at 12:40pm. Head coach, Huang Yibing expressed that despite some success was achieved, he also saw the insufficiencies of the teams.

Coach Huang: We cannot come back with 4 gold medals and think that everything will be okay, we should recognize the threat that we are facing at present as the gap between the opponents and our teams is closing.

Narrator: Although they topped the medal count with 4 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze, they could not help but feel somewhat embarrassed with the poorest results from the WAG team of the past half year. This time as they returned to home, while there was laughter from the male athletes, some sadness could be felt from the girls.

(Qiushuang interviewed)
Reporter: Were you nervous before the match?
Qiushuang: I was.
Reporter: Do you think it was the environment or what?
Qiushuang: I just get nervous at competitions. (she was in no mood to talk at all)
(reporter patting her back)

Reporter: Jia yo. Everyone gets like that in the beginning. (Qiushuang nods, kind of)

(shows Kexin steps down from bus)
Narrator: Kexin, who lost the chance for the UB gold due to a big error, had puffy eyes as she pushed her luggage along.

(Coach Lu interviewed)
Narrator: At his WAG team’s loss, Coach Lu expressed that it was due to the lack of experience in a major competition.
Coach Lu: This time at our strong event, the UB, we did really well at the prelims; but we had problems at the team finals. Essentially, this was a wake-up call for us; especially for Kexin‘s mistake, she had not made an error in all of her finals before.

Narrator: The WAG team has lost it’s main pillar, Cheng Fei; it is very challenging for Jiang Yuyuan to shoulder the heavy responsibilities alone and as team leader, she deeply feels the weight on her.

(Yuyuan interviewed)
Yuyuan: One, it is about the experience in competitions, and the other it is having the confidence; the juniors still lack confidence. This was their first big meet, well, not for Sui Sui (Sui Lu), but she needs to accumulate her experience to have better performances.

Narrator: At this WTC, the strong teams of Russia and USA were also at the stage of having juniors taking over, gradually; there were many new faces in these teams. In terms of D-value, the 3 teams (Russia, USA, China) were neck and neck, but the Chinese juniors had shown to be more green competing on the spot; whereas the Russians and Americans performed like seasoned athletes, this has a lot to do with their training environments back home. (shows Mustafina’s final tumble pass on FX; teammates cheer and high five)

(senior gymnastic reporter, Bao, interviewed)
Bao: In the US, Russia and the European countries, gymnastic meets are held in a very grand way, their young gymnasts participate in these grand national competitions and club meets and they are immersed in the atmosphere of international meets since little. These kids are extremely charged up on the international stage; especially at team finals, if they had a good start they just get better and better, so we often see exceptional performances at the last of the events from them.

Narrator: Simply said, the foreign athletes treat competitions like they are at training whereas all the Chinese athletes know is to train and train; even though the techniques are like second nature to them but their mentalities are easily affected in an international meet. At present, there are only 3 options to compensate the absence of Cheng Fei: one, to make a selection out of the current team members; two, to wait for the return of Cheng Fei; three, to screen the crop for a core athlete. But these are not permanent solutions. Comparing to the gymnastic training molds of the Russians and the Americans, the Chinese are at a disadvantage in terms of the availability of core talents.

Narrator: While the women athletes had problems, the men’s team had their share of pressures as well. At this WTC, the fine performances of the Japanese juniors had made Chen Yibing to expect a hard battle at the upcoming Asian Games.

(Yibing interviewed)
Yibing: Except for our advantage at Rings, it seemed that we could not pull ahead in other events and we will have to work on these challenges.
(head coach, Huang interviewed)

Coach Huang: At the last men’s team finals we were ahead of the Japanese by over 7 points, but this time it was just by 1.22. The champion of this next team finals will be determined purely by the success ratio at competitions.

Narrator: Like the WAG team, the men are in need of a core team member like Yang Wei. While Chen Yibing and Teng Haibing are the current seniors, they are still not exactly at the same level as the past seniors like Yang Wei and Li Xiao Peng.

(Yibing interviewed)
Yibing: We are definitely not as gifted. Even now, as a core athlete myself, I am no comparison to Wei Ge (big brother Wei).

Narrator: Accordingly, the Chinese teams will begin to prepare for the Asian Games immediately after returning home. They will have hardly any time to rest as the next challenge presses near. Reporter, Huang Haiming, signing off.

(back to studio)
Broadcaster: Let’s hope that our teams benefit from this past experience and achieve great results at the Asian Games.

CCTV Coverage of Women’s AA Finals in 2010 Rotterdam Worlds

-translated by longdoydoy

(CCTV5 studio)
Female presenter: The women’s AA finals in Rotterdam concluded this morning.
Chinese gymnasts Jiang Yuyuan and Huang Qiushuang did a splendid job and earned 2nd and 4th placements respectively.

Male presenter: Jiang Yuyuan’s silver medal is thus far the best results for the Chinese women’s AA in a world class gymnastics competition. The AA gold medal was taken by Russian gymnast, 16 year-old Mustafina.

(shows scene of AA finals)
Narrator: The AA contenders compete in 4 events of VT, UB, BB and FX. Our two girls performed very well today, they had the top 2 rankings after 3 events were competed. (Yuyuan on bars) In the event of UB, Jiang Yuyuan started smoothly with an exceptionally long routine, with 3 continuous pirouettes followed by a Tkachev executed with good flow; she earned 15.533 in this 6.9 D-value UB routine, the highest score (dismount, crowd applauds). In the AA FX, Yuyuan did much better than in the team finals, she completed her difficult techniques in her frolic floor music “Lift up your veil” and secured 2nd ranking. This was the best result in the Chinese women’s AA at a world championships.

(Yuyuan interviewed)
Zhang Jie: We found that you had exceptional stability today, do you feel that it’s the result of your accumulated experiences in the past international matches?
Yuyuan: Yes, I have learned to hold it together through all those competitions.
Zhang Jie: How had you remained focus?
Yuyuan: Through systematic practices I had the confidence to concentrate and just went out there and performed.

(shows Qiushuang on VT)
Narrator: Although this is the first Worlds for Qiushuang, she has not been holding back; she was ranked third after 3 events. But in the last event, the FX, (shows Qiushuang’s error in FX) she was out of bounds with both feet in her “900 degree back lay-out and 360 degree front lay-out” tumble pass (phew! That’s a mouthful for the Chinese term :D Just kidding!) and was caught up by American gymnast, Rebecca Bross, and ranked fourth in the end.

(Qiushuang interviewed)
Qiushuang: This is my first Worlds AA, I will mature with this experience; I am already very pleased that I had gone through with my 4 events here (smiles). I will need to “walk the path and polish myself” in my AA competitions (Chinese expression).

(shows Mustafina on bars)
Narrator: The AA championship belonged to Russian gymnast, 16 year-old Mustafina, she competed in the AA finals with a first ranking in prelims. This was her first Worlds AA, she seemed to have shown anxieties in her UB and BB, and had slowed down her rhythm of her routines.

Narrator: ...(shows Mustafina on FX) Nevertheless, in the final event, the FX, she was the last gymnast to compete, and she had let go of all pressures and executed her best FX routine ever. (shows Mustafina, Bross and Jiang on awards podium) In the end, she had earned the highest score of 61.032.
